They provide emotional and physical comfort measures to support and empower mothers through the birth, and they do it well!
Some couples believe that doulas will interfere with the partner’s ability to support the mother during labor. Nothing could be farther from the truth. A good doula is like a coach, she knows all the plays, but also knows how to direct the players. Doulas help partners understand the process, they help them know when to do those hip presses, and when to use which comfort measures. Partners are able to be fully present to the mother, and to be intimately involved in the process of labor and birth. Doulas are not there to take the place of your partner, but to help you both during this special time.
“When you change the way you view birth, the way you birth will change.”
~Marie Mongan, Hypnobirthing
"Doulas are women who “mother the mother”.
According to DONA:
Numerous clinical studies have found that a doula’s presence at birth:
- tends to result in shorter labors with fewer complications
- reduces negative feelings about one’s childbirth experience
- reduces the need for pitocin (a labor-inducing drug), forceps or vacuum extraction and cesareans
- reduces the mother’s request for pain medication and/or epidurals
We welcome doulas into your care plan! A mother cannot have too much love and support during this time. We believe so deeply in the benefit of doulas that Embrace Midwifery Care & Birth Center has begun a Doula Internship Program. All of our mothers who want a doula, can now choose a doula in our program at no additional cost! Just join us at our Meet & Mingle Doula Nights and pick the one who resonates with you!
If you already have a doula, congratulations! She is more than welcome at Embrace!
